Lobby Day 2009

Submitted by YDWA on Thu, 01/01/2009 - 15:46.

On February 16th, Young Democrats from across the state will be meeting in Olympia to lobby for the issues that matter to us! You'll have the opportunity to let us know what those issues should be.

We're going to be meet in Olympia that morning for training on how to lobby effectively, meet with lobbyists working on our issues, and have meetings with our Legislators. This is a great opportunity to let the people who represent you know what you think matters!

If you have specific bills or issues that you are passionate about, please take our Lobby Day Survey and let us know what you want to talk about!

To register for Lobby Day, go to the YDWA Registration Website.

Inaugurations: Olympia and DC

Submitted by YDWA on Thu, 01/01/2009 - 15:25.

Governor Gregoire's Inaugural Ball is being held January 14th at the State Capitol. Tickets are $100 (sorry, no YDWA discount for this event), and more information is available from the Inaugural Ball's Website. Tickets are limited, and going fast! This is an event not to be missed, and only comes up every 4 years! So put on your best dress, look sharp, and see you there!

If you are headed to Washington DC for Barack Obama's inauguration on January 20th, The Youth Council of the DNC has put together handy list of events that are youth friendly or targeted. If you go, send back lots of pictures to share with your fellow YDs to pictures@ydwa.org.

Happy New Year from YDWA!

Submitted by YDWA on Thu, 01/01/2009 - 15:23.

2008 has come and gone, and we're about to turn a page. Thanks in no small part to our efforts, we made 2008 a year of change.

In the first few weeks of the new year, we will see Barack Obama and Joe Biden sworn in, along with a new Cabinet. A new Congress will come to power, and we will have a great opportunity to move this country forward. George W. Bush will go back to the ranch - good riddance!

Unfortunately, the mess that Bush and his Republican cronies made will last a little longer. Obama, Biden, the Cabinet and new Congress face amazing challenges, but hey, we've been in worse times before and done well. This is America, a country where no problems are so big that they are insurmountable. Barack Obama was elected on this premise, and we know that he and our new Democratic leaders will work tirelessly to get our country up to speed again and to move us forward.

(Re)Organizing The Party

Submitted by YDWA on Sun, 12/28/2008 - 12:31.

Every two years the Democratic party begins anew by electing leaders at all levels of the party. You can learn about your local district and county reorganization meetings here.

These meetings are a great way for people new to the Democratic party organization to get involved--by running for a position, voting on leadership, or becoming an appointed PCO. If your local meeting has already happened, contact your chair and join the group at the next regular meeting!

The State Party's reorganization meeting will be held January 23rd and 24th in Olympia. Young Democrats will be at this meeting to have a quarterly General Board Meeting, as well as other events for all YDs. We hope to see you there!

Holiday Party Recap

Submitted by YDWA on Mon, 12/15/2008 - 07:25.

The State Democratic Party held the annual Holiday Party December 14th at the Convention Center in downtown Seattle. Circus Contraption provided amazing acrobatic entertainment, while democrats partied the night away.

Governor Gregoire and Senator Patty Murray were honored guests. Chairman Dwight helped lead state legislators, including former YD Derek Kilmer, and active YD Marko Liias, in festive holiday songs while wearing Santa hats.

YDWA members were well represented, and thought it was a great way to cap off a historic political year.
